Lake Travis left its mark on Friday night’s game between Texas Tech and Southern Methodist, a game Tech won 41-23.

SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert scored on a 23-yard run to bring the Mustangs within 20-16 entering the fourth quarter. But Baker Mayfield led Tech on three unanswered scoring drives, rushing for an 11-yard score and connecting with Jakeem Grant and Reginald Davis for scores to push the lead out to 41-16.

Mayfield, the true freshman making waves as a walk-on, threw 60 passes in his college debut, completing 43 for 413 yards and four scores without an interception. He also added the rushing touchdown. Mayfield’s performance earned him Big XII offensive player of the week honors.

Mayfield started in place of redshirt sophomore Michael Brewer, sidelined earlier this fall with a back injury.

Gilbert completed 41 of 62 passes for 388 yards, his career high. He finished without a touchdown or interception in the air but added a touchdown on the ground. Both Mayfield and Gilbert led their teams in rushing as well.

“I was impressed,” Lake Travis coach Hank Carter said after watching his alums play. “I’m very proud of Baker and proud of Garrett, too. I thought he played well, but I think he’s dealing with a little bit different set of skill guys than what Tech has. It was really neat to watch those guys play and play well. I’m excited for Baker that he came out and played well.”

While the quarterbacks stood in the spotlight, they weren’t the only Cavaliers to see action. SMU’s first play was a handoff to Colin Lagasse, who also caught a pair of passes in his college debut after red-shirting in 2012.

Ryan Erxleben handled the punting for the Red Raiders. He punted six times for an average of 43.0 yards and had three punts downed inside the SMU 20-yard line.

Kramer Fyfe handled the kickoffs for the Red Raiders. He kicked off seven times, four of which resulted in touchbacks.

Neither Brewer nor Zach Austin, a freshman receiver, played for Tech.
