Off a 52-7 win over Westwood, Lake Travis advances to the Area Playoffs for the first time as a 5A school. The Cavaliers face Humble Atascocita, runner-up from District 13-5A.

Atascocita (10-1) enters Saturday’s game riding a seven-game winning streak. The Eagles’ only loss came to unbeaten Spring Westfield, 41-17 on Sept. 28. Lake Travis brings a 9-game winning streak. The Cavaliers’ only loss came in the season opener against Converse Judson 25-19.

The Eagles reached the Area playoffs with a 42-24 win over Lufkin. Quarterback Greg Campbell sparked the win with a hand in all of Atascocita’s scoring. He rushed for four touchdowns, including runs of 47 and 31 yards, and passed for two more while amassing 395 yards combined passing and rushing.

Campbell has led the Eagles all season. He’s completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 2,284 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushed for 1,111 yards and 15 more scores while averaging 7.1 yards per rush. His size and speed have caught Lake Travis coach Hank Carter’s eye.

“Anytime someone has a dynamic quarterback who can make plays with his arm and his feet, it’s a challenge,” Carter said. “They can beat people a lot of different ways but the guy who makes them go is their QB. He’s tough. He’s really fast. It will be a great challenge for our kids.”

Carter likens Campbell to former Longview quarterback Aaron Johnson, who led the Lobos against the Cavaliers in the 2008 and 2009 4A Division I championship games.

“The quarterback reminds me of the Longview QB when we played them in 2008 and 2009,” Carter said. “Tall kid. Fast. [Campbell’s] a strider so it doesn’t look like he’s all that fast but nobody really catches him. He gave Lufkin fits. That was the difference. He took over that game.”

Campbell is far from Atascocita’s only weapon. Jemarcus Jones has rushed for 783 yards and caught passes for another 141 yards. Receiver Taylor Stump averages 17 yards a catch and is Campbell’s favorite target with 51 catches including 13 touchdowns.

“Their receivers are bigger than we’ve seen,” Carter said. “One of them is 6-foot-5, the other is 6-foot-2. They look like a million bucks.”

Carter compares Atascocita to teams such as Pearland Dawson – who Lake Travis faced and beat in two 4A state semifinal games – and Converse Judson, the San Antonio area 5A power who split a pair of season openers with the Cavaliers the last two seasons.

“Athletically, this team is pretty special,” Carter said of Atascocita. “These are types of kids we are going to see as we get deeper in the playoffs. Reminds me of a Judson or Dawson team. Big and fast. Will be a good test.”
