Week 5 happenings from seasons past

2003: End of a streak

Midway through the 2003 season, Lake Travis finds itself 0-4 and in the midst of an 18-game losing streak that dates back to 2001. Playing at Del Valle, Luke Lagera breaks free for an 81-yard touchdown run, one of three on the night, to lead the Cavaliers to a 22-12 win, the first of Coach Jeff Dicus’ tenure. Current Lake Travis assistant coach Kevin Halfmann was Del Valle’s head coach at the time.

2004: You’ll get nothing, and like it

In building Lake Travis into a championship program, Dicus focused first and foremost on offense. His teams improved offensively each year, often overshadowing the Cavalier defense. On this week in 2004, Lake Travis blanked Elgin 28-0, earning one of the only two shutouts posted during the Dicus era. The other came later that season over Marble Falls.

2007: Program-defining week

As Lake Travis prepares to face Vista Ridge in an otherwise innocuous district game, all is not well with the program. Players threaten to walk away from the program amid what they feel are undeserved punishments from Dicus. Following a meeting with senior players, then-Principal Charlie Little meets with Dicus, AD Jack Moss and Deputy Superintendent Diane Frost about player treatment. An enraged Dicus takes two days away from the program and returns on game day, which sees Marcus Pate make a game-saving play late, preserving a 33-28 win. The Cavaliers went on to win their first state title.

2010: Take that, Tigers

Before Westlake, Lake Travis’ bitter rivals resided just south of Highway 12 in Dripping Springs. Early on, Drip dominated the rivalry, but beginning in 2003, began a rivalry-ending streak of nine consecutive wins. In 2010, Lake Travis blanked the Tigers 38-0 on their home field and allowed just 104 yards of offense, sacking Tiger quarterbacks six times and intercepting two passes. Dannon Cavil sparked the Cavalier offense with a 60-yard touchdown catch and a 50-yard touchdown run.
