A look at happenings from seasons past in week 4
1996: A tie is like…never going to happen again
Lake Travis and Anderson play to a 7-7 tie on a muggy night that sees both teams deal with their fair share of cramps. Running back Ben Reid scores the Cavaliers’ only touchdown. Lake Travis’ other tie came in 1994 against Brady. That game ended even at 27.
2007: Trouble brewing
The Cavaliers win their District 25-4A opener, beating Burnet by a convincing 30-14 score for a second straight win. But all was not well. Following the game then-coach Jeff Dicus wasn’t happy with the effort, his anger spiked when Burnet scored a late touchdown against the Cavaliers’ backups. The anger and discord carried over to the following week, when principals and administrators got involved and Dicus briefly left the program before returning the day of the next game.
2008: Storied guest
The defending state champion Cavaliers played their first – and only to this point – out of state opponent in well-known Evangel Christian Academy from Shreveport, La. The Eagles brought a talented team to Lakeway only to run into a Lake Travis buzz-saw. Garrett Gilbert proved sharp early, throwing four first-half touchdown passes to rally the Cavaliers from a 12-8 deficit to a 46-31 win. He finished with 414 yards passing and five scores, two each to Cade McCrary and Austin Pollard.
2010: Heeere’s Johnny
Lake Travis hosts Kerrville Tivy and their future Heisman winning quarterback Johnny Manziell. The Cavaliers fall behind 19-0 and rally behind back-up quarterback Colin Lagasse. Manziell passes for 195 yards and rushes for 273 more, earning the moniker “Brett Favre on a motorcycle” from the Cavalier coaches. But Lagasse rallies Lake Travis to the lead, then snuffs out Manziell’s last-ditch rally by intercepting a pass in the end zone to seal Lake Travis’ 37-33 win. Lagasse matches Manziell score-for-score. Manziell rushed for four scores and threw for a fifth. Lagasse threw for four and rushed for a fifth.
