5 things about Converse Judson
Titletown, San Antonio
Judson is one of the few schools with more state championship trophies than Lake Travis. The Rockets have won six titles and have reached the championship game 11 times, most recently in 2007, a 13-10 loss to Euless Trinity. The Rockets last title came in 2002, a 33-32 win over Midland. The Rockets made six title game appearances between 1990 and 1998. Additionally, the Rockets have made it to the state semifinals 18 times.
All we do is win
Judson currently holds the longest streak of winning seasons in Texas high school football history. The Rockets have finished above .500 for 39 straight seasons, dating back to 1977. The Rockets were 2-7-1 in 1976, the fifth straight losing season. Jerry Sanders replaced Larry Satcher as coach and the losing stopped. The Rockets 95 lifetime playoff wins rank sixth in state history.
Streak stopper
Judson has had success on the road against Lake Travis. The Rockets topped the Cavaliers 25-19 to open the 2013 season, ending the Cavaliers’ eight-year streak of winning season openers. Prior to that loss, the Cavaliers hadn’t lost an opener since 2004, a 42-35 defeat at Taylor.
Ready for launch
Coming off back-to-back state semifinal appearances, the Rockets hope to enjoy another lengthy season. Led by QB Julon Williams and running backs Jay Miller and Sincere McCormick, the Rockets topped the 40-point mark seven times in 2015. Williams, who’s started since his freshman season, and Miller are both juniors and McCormick is a sophomore. They combined for nearly 3,000 yards rushing last year and Williams added 2,071 passing. Since a 1-3 start in 2014, the Rockets have won 22 of 26 games.
Until we meet again
Though the teams have met in the past and began talking about a new two-year series, neither Lake Travis’ Hank Carter or Judson’s Sean McAuliffe are thrilled with playing each other. The match-up looked good when Carter though the Cavaliers would stay in Region 2, but realignment sent them back to Region 4, and as all-but-certain Division I playoff qualifiers, the teams could see each other in either the second or fourth rounds, depending on how each comes out of its district.
