Opportunistic Defense Doubles Season Interception Count in First Half

Few could have seen the first half coming. Johnson's Ty Hawkins hadn’t thrown many interceptions – just 5 in his first 11 games – and Lake Travis hadn’t intercepted many passes – only 6 on the season.

Lake Travis safety Keiondre Lewis went halfway across the field to intercept Hawkins on Johnson’s first play of the game and things snowballed from there.

“I think I went pretty far, but I saw him look that way and knew I had to go get it,” Lewis said. “I think (Hawkins) is a really good player, but he wasn’t on the right track tonight. All of the defensive backs took advantage of that. It was a chain reaction after I caught that one.”

On Johnson's second possession, Cam’Ren-Chance Brooks nabbed Hawkins' second pass of the game as well. The Cavaliers led 20-0 when Walker Moore stepped in front of a pass meant for King Johnson. After Everett Underhill came up with an interception midway through the second quarter, Lake Travis stopped two more chances with interceptions in the end zone by Moore and then Josiah Estes on the final play of the first half.

“It was great,” Lake Travis coach Hank Carter said. “We have gotten our hands on a bunch of footballs this year, but most of them we’ve dropped. Tonight when we got our hands on the ball we caught it.”

Carter said the Cavaliers didn’t do anything differently leading up to the game. They played the same type of coverages they’ve played throughout the season. Practice, he said, is paying off.

“It’s really boring, but we’re getting better because we’re practicing more,” he said. “They are more comfortable playing balls over their head and they are in better position.”

Moore said Lake Travis’ bounty of interceptions resulted from what the defensive backs saw watching film during the week.

“That was a big factor,” Moore said. “We saw a lot of the routes they ran and the releases (from the line of scrimmage) that their receivers took were really consistent. We knew where their routes were going to be.”

Estes, a three-year starter in the secondary who has played in 10 career playoff games, said he’s never been in a game quite like this one.

“Our back-end guys were on it today,” Estes said. “We caught the ball today and I am really proud of all of us.
