After sweep of Stony Point, Klein Collins awaits

Lake Travis takes on Klein Collins in a best-of-three Area playoff series.

The Cavaliers (21-5) advanced with a sweep of Stony Point, but the Cavaliers will switch up their planned rotation for the Tigers. Tate Sandford, who didn’t pitch against Stony Point, will open the series against Collins Wednesday in Houston. He went 5-1 on the season with a 0.47 ERA in six starts. He last pitched on April 24, a 1-0 win over Westlake.

That will leave Jackson Parthasarathy and A.J. Wolin as the likely starters in games two and three. Parthasarathy dominated Stony Point, tossing a 1-hit shutout for his second straight complete game. Wolin needed relief help from Tate Gillespie and Colton Bailey to win the clincher 4-3. Gillespie and Bailey pitched 4 and a third innings of scoreless relief to close out the Tigers with Bailey earning his third save.

Klein Collins (20-9), the runner-up in District 15-6A, needed three games to get past Atascocita last week. The Tigers won the clincher 6-3 thanks to big games from first baseman Angel DeLaFuente and catcher Dillon Nesbitt, who combined to drive in four runs to back Austin Boyles’ complete game effort. DeLaFuente doubled and homered, and Nesbitt added an insurance single in the seventh.

Nick Mikolajchak pitched the Tigers to a win in the series opener, when DeLaFuente had a two-run triple and infielder Colin Laird delivered two hits and an early RBI. Along with shortstop Jacob Rodriguez, the trio combined for seven RBI in the 9-2 win.

The teams open the series Wednesday at Klein Collins. Game two is set for Friday at Lake Travis at 7:30. Game three, if necessary, would be Saturday in Weimar.
