A timely hit from an unlikely source gave Lake Travis a 1-0 win over Westlake Friday night.

Senior outfielder Eric Gonzales, starting in place of Chris Roller, delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth. Gonzales, who had just 10 at bats and one hit coming into the game, fouled off two two-strike pitches before lining a single up the middle to score Chase Ratliff with the game’s only run.

“I don’t get that many chances to bat, so I wanted to take advantage of that situation,” Gonzales said. “I had two strikes and I just went for it. I just wanted to put something in play.”

Gonzales also made a key defensive play to snuff out a Westlake rally. With two outs and the tying run at third, Gonzales ran down Griffin Williams’ long drive into deep center field.

“When he hit it, I thought ‘oh no,’” Gonzales said. “I couldn’t let that get over my head. It was hit really deep and I was able to get under it.”

Gonzales’ heroics made a winner out of Tate Sandford, who pitched five shutout innings. Colton Bailey pitched the final two innings for his third save. Sandford improved to 5-1 on the season.

The win keeps Lake Travis in line for a showdown Tuesday night with district-leading Bowie. The Dawgs lead the Cavaliers by a game in the standings. Lake Travis can pull even in the standings with a win Tuesday.

Bowie beat Lake Travis earlier this season 7-4 in a game played at Dell Diamond. The Cavaliers need to rediscover their batting shoes. With Friday’s 1-0 win over Westlake, the Cavaliers have scored just one run in their last 16 innings.

“We still feel pretty confident,” said Gonzales. “We just need to keep it up and stay positive.”
